Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, and assassinated on April 4, 1968. He was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 until his death in 1968. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence with the philosophy of nonviolent resistance.
As a minister and civil rights leader he used a combination of Christian theology, biblical history, sociology, and political theory to explain that black people were suffering because of their enslavement by whites; as well as to inspire blacks to use nonviolent protest to seek freedom, justice, and equality in America.
