Thurgood Marshall was the first black Supreme Court Justice. He was an American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, serving from October 1967 until October 1991.⁠ ⁠ He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland to a single mother during the Great Depression. When he was nine years old, his mother died and he went to live with his grandparents in West Virginia. Thurgood Marshall graduated from Lincoln University and Howard Law School, where he became a lawyer and began working for civil rights cases.
