For decades, women have been told that they aren't allowed to be angry. They've been told that if they speak up, they're being too aggressive. They've been told that if they are assertive, it's because they're bossy or bitchy or unlikable.
We've been taught that we shouldn't own our emotions—that it's not okay for us to express anger or frustration or sadness because it's unseemly or unattractive, or because we might get in trouble. We've been taught that if something makes us upset, it's our fault for being weak and stupid and ungrateful.
So no wonder so many women spend their lives apologizing for things they didn't do wrong, just because they feel guilty about existing in the first place!
