I have said the words “All you need are shoes” many times as a way to talk about how democratic running is. And as good as that sounds, I’m realizing this really isn’t the whole story. Furthermore, it’s probably another example of my privilege showing. Because honestly, I’ve never had to worry about the other things that I actually need in order to go for a run. For starters… -Gear ($) -Physical space -Clean, smooth sidewalks or well-kept trails -Clean air (what if you live near a landfill or factory?) -SAFETY and acceptance from your community (and we’re not just talking about safety of white women) That’s a heck of a lot more than a pair of shoes (which can also be $)! I’ve been listening a lot to nprcodeswitch podcast and they posted a video today with some history to explain why running isn’t as democratic and colorblind as many of us would like to believe.
