Colonialism in Africa didn’t just impact politics and language- it directly impacted the entertainment industry! Louis Brody (aka Ludwig M'bebe Mpessa) was born in Douala, Cameroon while it was occupied by Germany. He moved to Germany in his 20s and began to work as an actor. His work in German films paved the way for more Afro-Germans in the industry and cemented a place in cinema for black actors. His roles also showed how little real representation was shown. He would act in films where he was South American, Egyptian, Moor, or a generic “black servant”. So much progress has been made in the industry to allow us to create The German King, a series from an African filmmaker starring African talent.
