A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near New York City on April 5 in the morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said, shaking buildings and surprising residents in an area that rarely experiences notable seismic activity.   The shaking startled a United Nations Security Council meeting, where the president of Save the Children, Janti Soeripto, was making remarks. Soeripto paused and asked, “Is that an earthquake?”   The quake’s epicenter was near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, and occurred just after 10:20 a.m. ET at a depth of 2.9 miles.   People reported feeling tremors from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts.
