The Brown University Women’s basketball team stands in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter Movement. Our black allies have persevered through systemic racism and oppression for far too long. Although the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery have been at the forefront of the media, it is critical to recognize the countless lives that have been lost due to police brutality. As athletes, it is time that we utilize our voices. As a team, we will use our platform to condemn police brutality and the long history of injustice towards black people. Collegiate institutions have a long history of silencing black athletes. Athletic programs that benefit off of black athletes often remain silent on issues within the black community, and continue to exploit black athletes.
