Hairy can sometimes mean scary and the puss caterpillar is no exception. Those hairs are actually venomous spines that can cause excruciating pain if touched (not to mention swelling, nausea, headache, to name a few symptoms). The puss caterpillar is the larva of the southern flannel moth, which can be found on the eastern United States between New Jersey and Florida, as well as states in the south, including Arkansas and Texas.
