Xoloitzcuintli. This hairless dog has been revered by indigenous Mexican people for centuries. Xolos were even buried with their owners to guide their souls to the underworld! It is now the national dog of Mexico and a common subject in Frida Kahlo’s paintings. This rare breed was endangered until 1954 when an initiative was made to restore the breed. Don’t let the myth fool you, this dog isn’t actually the chupacabra!
