Supposedly because they are descended from the Japanese bobtail breed - combined with island interbreeding, most of the cats are born with these shorter tails. There are 2,000 Indonesians on Gili T. And 3,000 cats. Only 13 (according to LonelyPlanet) have your typical longer tails.
