A woman and her son were skipping rocks on the lake as I watched the sun set. She came up to me after and apologized. “You seem like you’re looking for solitude — I’m sorry we ruined that”

I smiled and replied, “Don’t be sorry at all — it looked like you had a great time”. And it did. I loved watching them play. Loved listening to the family that was having a barbecue behind me. The kids who raced by me on their bikes down to the water.
I travel alone, but not because I want to constantly be alone. I travel alone, in part, to be able to take in these moments fully. To have these conversations. To observe the beauty of not just nature, but the people that inhabit it.
I want to get outside of myself. To be a part of a community of people that will never be assembled together again. Learn about joy as I watch strangers faces light up. Gratitude thinking of my own family while watching another.
Remembering that it’s not about me. Remembering to play.
