My great uncle was also a math teacher. He liked the same things as me. I’d go to his house to watch Daria on vhs and use the Internet (he was the first person I knew with it).
At his funeral I heard a lot of stories about his summers spent traveling. Taking his van to camp in the Grand Canyon.
So I decided if it was good enough for him, it was good enough for me.
So four years ago I decided to go. It was my first real solo adventure. I was 29 with just my car and a backpack for a week. I got to the Grand Canyon at sunrise and didn’t stop until after sunset. I walked so long and so far I forgot to eat.
And I liked it so much I just kept doing it. Now, 48 total solo parks later it’s just as special. More special. I watch the sun rise and think of that first trip. My uncle. What he would think of me now. Pretty sure he’d be as proud of me as I am of myself.
