Numbers rule the universe. I have this quote hanging in my classroom. And it's kind of true. I guess. I mean, I am a math teacher -- I have to say these things. Or do I? To be honest, I have a love hate relationship with numbers. I love math, I love statistics, analytics, tracking -- but I also hate it. I also think that over-quantification of life is really damaging. ⁣ ⁣ You see, when you measure something -- it creates a ranking. Which is sometimes okay, but a lot of times not helpful. Ranking leads to comparison. It shows me how I am in comparison to someone else -- but I am very different than someone else. You are very different than someone else. ⁣ ⁣ Even in school, honestly. The intangibles are what are important to me. What I want to teach. I don't care if there's a way to measure them -- I know I'm teaching them. That's what matters. ⁣ ⁣ I got a beautiful message from a former student yesterday. This happens occasionally. Someone I haven't seen in 5+ years. Who is now an adult...
