As my 9th year of teaching is coming to a close (7 days to freedom!) I’ve been doing some reflecting. I always think it’s so strange that I’m a teacher. I didn’t go to school for education or ever want to be one, until like 3 months before I became one.

I didn’t really like school until college. I was the annoying kid who questioned the purpose of everything. I quit school in 5th grade (yeah really) then again in 9th. I came home and told my parents I was wasting all my time with boring busywork and two separate study halls and my goodness, parents how could you allow me to be brutalized like this?! Haha.. so I found a correspondence school and graduated at 15.

I never went to prom. Didn’t take AP classes. Didn’t fit the mold of what I’m pushing every day to my students. I refused to do things I didn’t want to do because I didn’t see the value in them.

And somehow it worked for me. I’m successful. Intelligent. Well educated. But I’m not so naive to think that would be true for...
