It’s Teacher Appreciation Day! I’ve been teaching math for 9 years. At 5 different schools. From 6-12th grades. In 2 different states. Through that time I’ve seen many people burn out or leave the profession. And I mean, there’s not a teacher shortage for no reason. But that’s not what this is about. . . Teachers who leave, or who are feeling stuck, often have this huge identity crisis. Teaching is one of those professions that supersedes anything else about you. You don’t see “Colorado woman _____” on the news, you see “Colorado teacher _____” It’s a strong identity. It says something about you. Your character. . . But that also brings a lot of pressure. I feel it. I’m not leaving now, but I’ve thought about it. I’ve been burnt out. Felt unappreciated. And I think about what would happen If I did. I wouldn’t be ______, _____, or _______.
