Buona Festa dell'Epifania! Today is Epiphany, and this feast symbolizes when the Three Wise Men arrive in Bethlehem, bearing gifts for Baby Jesus on the 12th day of Christmas. However, in the fairytale version, the wise men invited a witch-like woman, or strega, to join them on their journey to bring gifts to the Christ child. Although overshadowed by the modern tradition of Santa Claus, La Befana remains adored by Italian children, who hang up their stockings in anticipation of gifts on the night before Epiphany. On January 6th you'll often hear the saying, “Tutte le feste porta via,” which means, it's Epiphany, and all of the holidays go away. Buona Befana!
