She was sitting and smiling and I said, ‘You don’t have to smile, just be yourself.’ It’s not about winning always. That is just a tiny part of their lives. So when I photograph them, that is not what I’m looking for. It could be funky, sad, intimate, or nonsense, but it doesn’t have to be about holding a trophy.
