I remember very little about growing up with Crohn's disease. I was diagnosed when I was 7, but I think my parents were probably more affected by the stress of living with a chronic illness than I was. I knew I was sick, but I was more concerned about whether I'd be able to go to dance the next day than I was about long-term treatment plans and what the disease meant for my future.
But I remember, when I got a bit older, one of my gastroenterologists (I've had many!) telling me that having Crohn’s disease meant I may not be able to have children when I was ready. When I pressed, he simply said, "I'm not sure, it just may complicate things." And so, for years, I had that in my head. I knew I wanted kids eventually, but suddenly had this unfounded worry seed planted in my head.
