“To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering.” This quote speaks to me on two levels. One on bodybuilding, the other on life. If you want to be great in bodybuilding you have to push through pain. I often remind myself during the set: “yes, this hurts, and this is exactly what we want. We welcome pain, because pain makes us stronger.” The pain in the gym has a meaning: growth. This quote is harder to reconcile with outside the gym. There is so much pain and suffering in the world, all the unfair acts, the untimely deaths and losses we experience. These are harder to find meaning in. I certainly don’t believe everything happens for a reason. Instead, I believe we can find meaning in the suffering. Let the pain of death encourage you to live to the fullest. Let the pain of loss encourage you to be grateful of what remains. Let the pain of unfairness remind you to be kind to all. Find your meaning in the suffering. .
