Welcome to our weekly feature ✨
#HauntedHotSpot ✨, where we take a deeper look at some of the most famous (and famously terrifying) sites in the world.
This week’s pick: The Whaley House
Location: San Diego, California
“This place is one hell of a haunt.” — Zak Bagans
The Whaley House is considered to be one of the most haunted houses in America (fun fact: it’s also the oldest brick structure in Southern California). Thomas Whaley built the home in the 1850’s for his family. During their years there, the family suffered a number of heartbreaks, including the death of their son, Thomas, from scarlet fever, and loss of their daughter, Violet, who died by suicide. These tragedies are believed to be one cause of the hauntings reported at the Whaley House.
The family aren’t the only ones supposedly roaming the halls: Yankee Jim, a notorious thief, was hanged at the same site where the Whaley House was built. His spirit is rumored to still be lingering on the grounds.
