Richard Allen, Minister ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Richard Allen was born into slavery but grew up to become one of America's most active and influential Black leaders. In 1794, he founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the first independent Black denomination in the United States. Allen cared passionately about education and opened a day school for African American children.
