Former Senator Tom Harkin championed disability rights and was the chief architect of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law 30 years ago today. His commitment to disability rights extends far beyond the ADA. During his 40-year career in Congress, he also worked on the passage of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Act of 2009. Thanks to this legislation, there are more access ramps, improved transportation and increased protection around employment, education and housing.
His activism on behalf of the disability community continues through his role as Senior Advisor to The HarkinInstitute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement at DrakeUniversity with the goal to inform citizens, inspire creative cooperation, and catalyze change on issues of social justice, fairness, and opportunity.
