Caring for a loved one who is living with paralysis is incredibly challenging. It requires strength, honesty, commitment, hope, compassion and, above all, it requires love. Dana Reeve compared the first weeks and months of facing paralysis as landing on another planet without a map. She reminded us to find the joy inside the hardship and did not sugarcoat the realities and challenges of paralysis. Dana is only one story of the many millions of caregivers who provide support for their partner, spouse, or family member. It is not easy. Some relationships don’t work out. But to suggest that they fail 100% of the time is simply untrue. We hope drphil hears the voices of the many couples living with paralysis and gives them a chance to tell their stories.
As Dana said to Christopher: “You’re still you. And I love you.”
