Dr. Mae Jemison (1956-) made history in 1992 as the first Black woman to travel into space. She was one of seven astronauts on mission STS-47, traveling into space aboard the Endeavor. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Growing up in Chicago, Jemison had a passion for science, and initially pursued a career in chemical engineering after high school. She earned her M.D. in 1981 from Cornell University Medical College and spent two and a half years working as a medical officer in the Peace Corps. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After deciding to follow her passion for astronomy, Jemison was accepted into NASA’s astronaut training program in 1987. Following her training, she became the first Black female astronaut in history.
