London is grinding to a standstill. With ongoing rail and Tube strikes, a ULEZ expansion policy which is throttling our city and a lack of infrastructural investment, from the seemingly permanent closure of the Hammersmith Bridge to the proposed Silvertown Tunnel tolls, it is all but impossible to travel across our nation’s capital quickly, easily and cheaply. As someone who has called London my home for over two decades, I know how much of an effect this is having; on commerce that powers our city, on parents trying to get their kids to school, on the delivery network and more. But why is this happening? Because our current Mayor, and his Conservative predecessor, ran up massive bills. Bills they can’t pay. Interest payments they can’t even make.
