When it comes to iconic African rulers, Sayyida Al-Hurra cannot be forgotten. She was born in the late 15th century in Grenada but moved with her family as refugees to Morocco when Spain exiled the Muslim community from the Iberian Peninsula. At a young age, she became governor of Tetouan, but turned her attention to reclaiming Grenada. Sayyida Al-Hurra amassed wealth and power through piracy, capturing the attention of many wealthy and powerful people in the area. She soon married the Sultan of Morocco and became Sultana - cementing her status as a fearsome ruler.
The name Sayyida Al-Hurra means “the Free Lady”, and she was truly a symbol of freedom and emancipation!
