Overheard in class. Sometimes as adults, we think we deserve respect simply because we’re older. Somehow our length of time on this earth is converted to the amount of respect i should get. I know I’ve found myself feeling this way, “hey! Respect me because I’m older!” But it isn’t always better and sometimes your age doesn’t make you more deserving. And, as my students are good at doing, a quick catch in a passing classroom conversation grounded me. • • You want the respect, but are you being a person that’s worth respecting? • • Who are you when you think no one is looking? In what ways can that person be better and improve?
