In 1940, the Sturgeon brothers—Joe, Jack, Tom, Fred, and Jim—quit their jobs in California and, using $3,000 of borrowed life insurance money, revitalized their parents’ old farmstead in Skagit County, Washington. With help from the Puget Sound Production Credit Association, the brothers had 1,500 acres in production and a successful dairy operation by 1945.
