Our mayor is ultimately responsible for the policing of London. As shocking scenes continue to emerge of a peaceful vigil, which had been organised to highlight the issues that women in our city face, being disrupted by police, the mayor has attempted to put distance between himself and the Metropolitan Police. One thing is clear: our police need better guidance and better leadership. While our Mayor acknowledges that the scenes were “unacceptable”, the lack of guidance to the Police from the Mayor before the vigil took place is truly shameful. It is obvious, despite his Tweets and press releases, that the Labour Mayor has yet again prevented legitimate protests from being held. Rather than trying to pass the buck onto his Metropolitan Police Commissioner, the Mayor needs to accept responsibility for the repeated failures on his watch. Sadiq Khan and his Police Commissioner need to resign with immediate effect. #khanout
