Complaining about Maine’s roads is a tradition as old as Maine roads. In 1909 Maine’s first commissioner of highways, Paul D. Sargent, lambasted the prevailing attitude toward road maintenance, which amounted to “working a section here and a section there when we can find nothing better to do.” Over 100 years later some things haven’t changed.
