Today we’re remembering illustrator, painter, and children’s book author Ashley Bryan, who used his art to bring attention to the African American experience. In our 2017 profile on the artist, Bryan told us about growing up in the Great Depression, fighting in WWII, and overcoming obstacles to become an internationally acclaimed professor and children’s book author. Originally from Harlem, Bryan considered Little Cranberry Island home for much of his life and established himself as a pillar of the community. Bryan died Friday at age 98.
