Today the Army’s civilian chief announced the firing and suspension of 14 leaders following a year of violence at Fort Hood military base in Killeen, Texas. This year the base has received negative attention as five soldiers died under suspicious circumstances including the death of Spc. Vanessa Guillén and Sgt. Elder Fernandes. The decision comes during the release of an independent investigation that pointed to a toxic climate and the failure to protect soldiers through its sexual harassment and assault response prevention program known as SHARP. During the investigation 503 women soldiers were interviewed. Of those interviewed, 93 credible accounts of sexual assault were discovered.
