For generations Black cowboys and cowgirls have called East Austin home. They are seen as a symbol of what and who remains as much of the cultural character of East Side has been erased due to gentrification. Many of these horse riders were born and raised here. They continue to cultivate community, preserve identity and carry on western traditions passed down. Each shared a different story of why they ride in their community and the statement they hope to make. “When we ride these horses around this city, it’s definitely making a statement that people of color are still here and we aren’t going anywhere,” said Kamesha Brooks. I’ve been working on this story for over a year. I’m so thrilled to share it with you all today because this group of people are just incredible. I’ve learned so much about East Austin.
