This week we hear from the Statesman’s Ricardo B. Brazziell (kkpsi_man) as he shares his experiences as a Black photojournalist documenting the community of Austin for 18 years. Most recently, Brazziell has been documenting the protests in Austin against police brutality and George Floyd’s funeral, which took place in Houston’s Third Ward. “As a Black man, I’ve experienced the same treatment the protesters are marching against,” Brazziell said in an Op-Ed essay. “I wanted to be out there to be in a police officer’s face and say ‘we don’t have to be like this, you don’t have to treat us like this.’” But Brazziell said he couldn’t say those things while he was working. “I was looking around and those people out there were saying those things for me,” Brazziell said. “I was trying to photograph and the only power I did have was my camera.” #atx #austin #texas #photojournalism #photojournalist #georgefloyd #georgefloydprotest #protest #austinprotest 📸 kkpsi_man
