Statesman photojournalist Ricardo B. Brazziell (kkpsi_man) was at home when he said he saw the video of then-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on George Floyd’s neck. “I felt like I was watching myself,” Brazziell said. “And the look on the police officer’s face was something I’ve seen before.” For 18 years, Brazziell has worked at the Austin American-Statesman. During that time he said he’s had several run-ins with police officers, security guards, property owners and individuals who have racially profiled him while on the job. “I get treated like that a lot,” Brazziell said. “Like I’m not human, like I don’t belong, you don’t belong here.” So when protesters started taking to the streets to decry the death of George Floyd and decades of police brutality against minorities, Brazziell knew work would be different. “This protest was different in a lot of ways,” Brazziell said. “This is about an issue, it’s an American issue though, that affects me.”
