“You want me to wear the jersey in any way that feels authentic to me, correct?” YES. I sent a clarification e-mail twice. It wasn’t because I misunderstood the directions. It was because I was having trouble with the idea of my authentic self.  You know when you fill out forms that identify which demographic you represent? Every time I checked a box, I felt more like a minority. My two worlds - as an engineering PhD and as a photographer in women’s football – are underrepresented by women. But in this process of coming to terms with my identity, I realized that I should embrace everything that represents me. Just because I am a woman, does not mean I cannot pursue these two paths. In fact, I hope my journey opens doors for the future, especially in my family, being the first Taparia with a PhD and the first Taparia to photograph a World Cup.
