#PeopleofJSU: “Tennis is not a big sport in Mexico. My dad is actually the reason I started playing. He learned to play tennis when he was young while cleaning at one of the biggest country clubs in Guadalajara. He started from the bottom, picking up the tennis balls. Now he’s the head coach. He was also my coach, and I really liked that. Before we started the process, he told me, ‘If you don’t agree with me, you’ve got to tell me. On the tennis court, I’m your coach, not your dad.’ He let me be his player. So on the court, we’d argue. He has even kicked me off the court sometimes. But at home, he was my dad. We don’t even talk about tennis at my house. My mom doesn’t let us because everything’s always about tennis. I really liked having my dad as my coach. It was nice. And after fighting hard in tournaments, I was ranked number one in Mexico for two years and got a scholarship to play in the United States.
