#GibbsGreen50 - On Feb. 27, the Jackson State University Student Government Association (SGA) hosted a memorial march up the Gibbs-Green plaza in celebration of the lives of Phillip Gibbs, Jr. and James Green who were killed by police on May 15, 1970. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the shooting.
A ceremony followed inside the Jacob L. Reddix general purpose room.
Jordan Jefferson, president of the SGA, described May 15, 1970 as a night of gunshots, fear, sadness and tears. He also reminded attendees of their role in society. “It’s up to us to make sure that their deaths (Gibbs-Green) are not in vain. So we take up the charge to fight injustice in any form because we are thee future of this institution, this city, this state and this nation. It is our responsibility to make this a better place for everyone, regardless of color and race.” Read more in the JSU Newsroom.
