Herman James Felton Jr., president of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, grew up a product of poverty in Jacksonville, Florida. One could say that statistically Felton was never supposed to make it out of Jacksonville, obtain a doctorate or become one of the youngest presidents of an HBCU for that matter.
But Felton obtained the “ever elusive Ph.D.” when he graduated from Jackson State University’s Executive Ph.D. Program in December 2018, continuing to overcome challenges including dyslexia.
