Everyone can suffer from mental health issues, but BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) are at an increased risk due to longstanding economic disparities, racial discrimination, and more. As a result, they often do not get adequate mental health treatment. Some of the contributing factors to these disparities are: 1. Lack of cultural understanding by health care providers may contribute to underdiagnosis and/or misdiagnosis of mental illness in people from racially/ethnically diverse populations 2. Racial/ethnic minority youth with behavioral health issues are more readily referred to the juvenile justice system than to specialty primary care, compared with white youth. 3.
