In 1992 the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) was created. The squad was tasked with handling violent crimes in Nigeria. The group was given autonomy and allowed to roam the streets with impunity. Officers roamed streets without badges and frequently profiled young Nigerians based on their appearance. They would set up illegal road blocks to arrest, accost, extort, rape, torture and in some instances murder. After massive protests broke out October 11th the government disbanded the group. However a new group was formed by the Nigerian government called “SWAT” to fill the void of SARS but not enough has changed. More is needed to reform the police.
