Did you know Zankel Hall didn’t open until 2003? The space was previously home to many different stages and theaters over the years. ⠀

It was originally the 1,200-seat Recital Hall. In 1896, the venue was reconfigured as the Carnegie Lyceum. It became an off-Broadway theater called the Carnegie Playhouse in 1956 (pictured here), and in 1961 was converted to an art-film movie house called the Carnegie Hall Cinema.
