“As an artist I come to sing, but as a citizen, I will always speak for peace, and no one can silence me in this.”—Paul Robeson. Committed to social activism, Paul Robeson worked to combat social injustices in addition to his career as a singer and actor. After making his Carnegie Hall debut in 1929, his “comeback” appearance in 1958 featured songs—in English, German, Russian, Hebrew, Yiddish, and Chinese—and theatrical monologues, including one from Othello, a highlight of the evening.
Today we induct Paul Robeson into the Carnegie Hall Digital Hall of Fame.
