As we begin Black Maternal Health Week, it’s essential to face a hard truth: the states with the strictest abortion laws also have the worst outcomes for mothers and children, particularly affecting Black women and birthing individuals. These places often lack adequate social welfare and family services, further exacerbating the issue. This week, we’re calling for significant changes to protect and improve the health of Black mothers and their children.
Our goal is straightforward but critical: to ensure broad insurance coverage that includes maternal, sexual, and reproductive healthcare; to make healthcare more accessible across different regions and birthing settings; to direct healthcare providers and insurers to offer equitable, high-quality care focused on the patient; and to fund research and initiatives that value the insights and contributions of Black women and birthing individuals.
