What on Earth is a Moon Tree!? In 1971, astronaut Stuart Roosa flew to the Moon aboard the Apollo 14 mission and carried with him hundreds of tree seeds in his personal kit. Once returned from lunar orbit, the Forest Service germinated the seeds and many were planted around the United States. The majority of these Apollo 14 Moon Trees continue to survive. The #Artemis I mission also carried tree seeds aboard the Orion spacecraft in late 2022 as part of a collaborative STEM engagement activity with NASA’s Next Gen STEM Project and the USDA Forest Service. These thousands of seeds traveled about 270,000 miles (435,000 km) from Earth, more than 40,000 miles (64,000 km) beyond the far side of the Moon. Stay connected with NASA STEM to learn how organizations can submit a proposal to become an Artemis Moon Tree Recipient! In the meantime, in collaboration with u.s.forestservice, NASA is running the Moon Trees Quest to seek out and observe the Moon Trees and other trees of the same specie...
