Ahead of the launch of the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE), a Rocket Lab technician connects the Photon lunar spacecraft with the second stage of the Electron vehicle.
The Photon is a satellite bus – a vessel that holds the satellite and its scientific components – capable of sending small payloads into low Earth orbit and our cosmic neighbors, like the Moon and Mars.
A partially recoverable launch vehicle named Electron will help power the CAPSTONE to its final destination, an elongated and halo-shaped orbit of the Moon. This first-of-its-kind orbit will be used as a test for the new lunar outpost Gateway.
#Artemis and CAPSTONE count on commercial partnerships to help build, design, and test the spacecraft and vehicles that will aid our return to the Moon. Photon and Electron were built by Rocket Lab of Long Beach, California, and CAPSTONE was built by Tyvak Nano-Satellite Systems, Inc., a Terran Orbital Corporation ...
