Ramping up! 🏎️
NASA’s first lunar mobile robot, Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover or VIPER, is seen here during its second round of egress testing at NASAJohnson Space Center.
Egress refers to the process of the rover exiting the lander after being carried from Earth to the Moon and driving onto the lunar surface. A prototype of the rover was driven down the ramps using the latest hardware and software in development for VIPER.
The VIPER mission is scheduled to be delivered to the Moon in late 2023 by Astrobotic’s Griffin lander as part of the Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. The data VIPER collects will help inform future
#Artemis missions to the Moon and beyond.
