On Jan. 6, Northrop Grumman's Cygnus (CRS-14) cargo ship departed the International Space Station, completing a 93-day cargo mission attached to the orbiting lab. Prior to departure, the crew packed Cygnus with the Saffire-V investigation and the SharkSat hosted payload to be conducted during an extended mission in orbit. This video shows Saffire-V, the large-scale, controlled fire in space that ground operators remotely ignited inside the cargo ship. The experiment tested how flames can spread across different materials in microgravity, helping us learn how to better prevent, detect, and mitigate spacecraft fires. On Jan. 26, Northrop Grumman flight controllers in Dulles, Virginia, will initiate Cygnus’ deorbit to perform a safe re-entry, burning up in Earth’s atmosphere. Another Saffire experiment is ready to fly on an upcoming launch to the space station as NASA continues to pursue a greater understanding of the risks and behaviors of fire in space for Artemis astronauts who will...
