Today, we honor and say farewell to a great. Astronaut Alfred “Al” M. Worden, command module pilot on the Apollo 15 lunar landing, passed away March 18, 2020, in Texas. Worden served as the command module pilot for Apollo 15 in 1971, the fourth lunar landing mission and the first to use a lunar rover. Remaining in orbit while commander David Scott and lunar module pilot James B. Irwin explored Hadley Rille and the Apennine Mountains, Worden photographed the lunar surface and made other observations. During the flight back from the Moon, Worden retrieved film from cameras in the module during a spacewalk. He was the first to perform a deep space spacewalk, while James Erwin stood in the hatch and took pictures. Here, the three Apollo 15 prime crew members can be seen inside the Apollo 15 Command Module (CM) during simulation training at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Worden is in the foreground. ✨
