A drone moves high above downtown Reno, Nevada on the afternoon of June 23, 2019 as part of NASA’s TCL-4 (Technology Capability Level) operation. TCL-4 involves flight testing multiple Unmanned Aerial Systems in higher-density urban areas for tasks such as newsgathering, package delivery and large-scale contingency mitigation. The next and final test site will be Corpus Christi, Texas in August. The challenges associated with the safe flight of drones – piloted or unpiloted – are a big topic in aerospace. NASA, with its partners including the FAA, is researching and planning ways to address the biggest barriers including noise, safety, certification, and public acceptance.
